1. In the Google video you linked here, what they’re actually doing is a French-originated sport called ‘Le Parkour’ or ‘Free Running’, where the person doing it (the ‘traceur’) aims to move fluidly through an urban environment, using their surroundings in a series of connected, flowing actions or moves. It’s got somewhat of a martial arts/gymnastics feel to it, and it’s exploding in popularity.

4. So how do we fix these ‘agenda-setting’ sites like memorandum and blogniscient and the upcoming topix news to add a little more humanity and broadness back in to them?

   A persistent criticism of national network tv news is that in effect it ends up being a small number of fairly homogenous thinkers(from the managerial boards to the news producers) setting the agenda for a large audience of viewers.

   It’s not quite so true today, but when network news was in its heyday, nothing mattered unless it was on the news, and anything on tv news was given undue weight by its mere presence there.

   If the web helped to bust this mindshare monopoly, there’s a risk that agenda-setters like memeorandum are a step backwards. It’s not deliberate, but on a lazy day I can see people only turning to those types of sites to decide ‘what’s important’ and getting out of the habit of casting a wider net.

5. You know this story arc is but so predictable. Happens with anything automated news gathering.

   When it first starts out, wheeeeeeee best thing ever, I don’t need to look at my other sources (feeds). But as more time passes, it begins to look narrow, elitest and you begin to realize you are missing some of the little stories that still mean a good deal, so everyone swings back trying to figure out how to add some spark back in. Google News, RocketNews, Moreover etc. etc. etc. redux.

6. Sure, it’s not a new concern, but it’s certainly still relevant. And it’s one worth keeping in mind.

   People feel safer talking about news that’s already been vetted as “news”. It makes for some tedious, repetitive coverage.

   Don’t get me wrong, I do think the technologies are improving, but they’re still not a replacement for sampling a wide variety of sources on your own, and making sure to keep some randomness in the mix. Just because it’s an old concern doesn’t mean we should dismiss it.

7. News that’s already been vetted as “news”? By a narrow slice of handpicked bloggers? Look right now what’s hitting the headlines, Structured Blogging, Technorati Kitchenisms, Rails 1.0, 10 Questions with Doc Searls, Long Tail and Making Money blather. News? Hardly.

   From a MFST news point, this is a MFST blog after all…Microsoft has eye on Scientific-Atlanta….MFST wants it’s MTV….Ozzie collaborational blah blah talk…Sneak peak at DirectX 10…Autodesk Expands it’s Strategic Alliance….Microsoft pre-paid PC-to-phone service with MCI (a future trainwreck)….’Mendocino’ almost on docket….rumors of 300K 360 units to ship before Xmas (don’t believe it)….360 total dud in Japan….Game Developers up in arms over poor launch, with retailers even worse….’Photon’: Windows Mobile 6.0 hype machine starts….FoxPro SP1….Server 2003 R2/Storage Server 2003 R2….GroupBar from VIBE people….Patch city.

   And that’s just in 5 mins…

8. And oh, legal wrangling over Vista themes, per KoL’s VistaXP Visual Style, shades of big bad Apple. A new low for the nit-picky MFST legal twerps. Funny thing is, it just got a huge popularity boost and all over the torrents. Controversy tends to do that.

12. More news…hahah, too rich for words.

    Fans wanting to get the best out of the King Kong video game should avoid the version for Microsoft’s new Xbox 360, the game’s maker Ubisoft has suggested. Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot admitted that the 360 game is too dark on standard TVs, making it hard to play.

15. Hi Kevin, hadn’t seen tailrank before. I like the philosophy — seems like it has a thinking man’s approach to addressing some of the concerns I expressed above about agenda-setting. I have some thoughts cooking but I need to ponder some more and learn more about it. The forum for it seems to be down, and I don’t see a contact email address on the page.
